Letting Yourself Be Seen Again
Share

One of the quietest things grief asked me to do was disappear. Not physically, but emotionally. I became incredibly good at surviving behind the scenes. I showed up to work, handled my responsibilities, and kept life moving forward, but somewhere along the way I stopped letting people truly see me. I stopped taking up space. I convinced myself that I needed to heal first, to have all the answers, to somehow become "okay" before I could fully step back into my life. Looking back, I realize I wasn't protecting my heart as much as I was hiding it.
Grief changes us. It leaves us feeling vulnerable, uncertain, and different than the person we were before life split into a "before" and an "after." It's easy to believe that because we've changed, we need to stay hidden until we figure out who we are again. But healing has taught me that the goal was never to become the woman I used to be. The goal was to meet the woman I was becoming.
For me, letting myself be seen again didn't happen in one brave moment. It happened one small yes at a time. It happened when I booked the solo trip I was afraid to take. It happened when I stepped back into the gym and chose to care for my body instead of simply carrying it through another day. It happened when I started sharing my story instead of keeping it locked inside. It happened every time I laughed with friends, posted the picture, launched the podcast, or allowed myself to dream about a future that once felt impossible. None of those moments erased my grief. They simply reminded me that grief wasn't the only thing living inside me anymore.
If you've been waiting until you're completely healed before allowing yourself to be seen, I want to lovingly challenge that belief. Healing isn't a destination you arrive at before life begins again. Healing happens while you're living. While you're showing up. While you're choosing joy. While you're building something beautiful from the pieces you thought could never become whole again.
So today, I hope you stop waiting for permission. Wear the dress. Take the picture. Accept the invitation. Start the business. Book the trip. Laugh without apologizing. Let people meet the person you are today, not the version of yourself you think you're supposed to become someday. The world doesn't need a perfect version of you. It needs the beautifully authentic woman who has survived, who is still healing, and who has decided she will no longer hide.
