It's Safe To Want Things Again
Share
One of the quietest things grief took from me wasn't my ability to love. It was my ability to imagine a future that excited me.
For a long time, I stopped asking myself what I wanted. I became so focused on surviving each day that dreaming felt unnecessary, even selfish. My energy was spent managing what was in front of me. The future became something I simply hoped I could get through, rather than something I looked forward to.
Then one day, something unexpected happened. I caught myself wanting something. It wasn't anything extraordinary. It was a simple thought about taking a trip, creating something meaningful, and imagining a life that felt full again. And almost as quickly as the dream arrived, guilt followed. "Are you allowed to want this?" "Does dreaming about tomorrow mean you've left yesterday behind?"
Those questions sat with me for a long time. But healing has taught me something beautiful. Wanting more from your life isn't a betrayal of what you've lost. It's a reflection of the life that still lives within you.
The love you carry doesn't diminish because you have new dreams. Your memories don't disappear because your heart begins to hope again. In fact, I believe the people we love would want us to keep living. To keep growing. To keep discovering joy in places we never expected to find it.
For me, wanting things again looked like saying yes to travel. It looked like building Sacred After. It looked like caring for my body, investing in my future, opening my heart to new possibilities, and believing that my story didn't end with loss. Every dream I allowed myself to embrace became another reminder that life wasn't asking me to forget. It was inviting me to continue.
If you've been quieting your own desires because you're afraid they'll dishonor your past, I hope you'll hear this with an open heart.
You are allowed to want a life that feels beautiful. You are allowed to make plans. You are allowed to dream without apology. Hope is not disloyal. Joy is not betrayal. And wanting more doesn't erase what came before. It simply means you've remembered that your future still deserves your attention.
Today, ask yourself one simple question:
"What do I want now?" Don't answer it for anyone else. Answer it for you.
Because the woman you're becoming isn't simply surviving anymore.
She's dreaming again.
