Reclaiming Your Light
Share

There was a time when I thought grief had taken everything from me. Not just the person I loved, but pieces of myself too. My joy felt distant. My confidence felt buried. The woman I had spent years becoming seemed to disappear beneath the weight of survival. After losing my husband, I wasn't focused on thriving. I was focused on making it through the day. I was focused on work, responsibilities, obligations, and simply figuring out how to exist in a world that no longer looked the way I thought it would. Somewhere along the way, I stopped seeing myself. I stopped noticing my own strength. I stopped noticing my dreams. I stopped noticing the spark that had always lived inside me.
What I know now is that grief doesn't take your light. It only makes it harder to see. Pain has a way of covering things. It covers joy. It covers the possibility. It covers the parts of ourselves that once felt effortless. But beneath the sadness, beneath the exhaustion, beneath the heartbreak, your light remains exactly where it has always been. Waiting. Patient. Steady. Unmoved by the storms you've survived.
Reclaiming your light isn't about becoming the person you were before loss. It's about meeting the person you are now. Wiser. Stronger. More compassionate. More aware of what truly matters. For me, reclaiming my light happened in small moments. It happened when I started traveling again. It happened when I began caring for my body. It happened through Sacred After. It happened when I laughed with friends, planted flowers in my garden, sat beneath my pergola with a glass of wine, and realized I wasn't just surviving anymore. I was living.
Maybe that's what reclaiming your light really is. Not finding something that was lost, but remembering something that never left. Remembering your worth. Remembering your beauty. Remembering your dreams. Remembering that even after heartbreak, there is still life waiting to be lived.
If you've been feeling disconnected from yourself, let this be your reminder: your light is still there. It has been there all along. You do not need to earn it back. You do not need to become someone else. You only need to give yourself permission to step back into it.
