Day 28: You Carried Yourself Through
Share
There was a time when I truly believed I wasn't going to make it through. The grief was overwhelming, and the silence that followed the loss of my husband felt louder than anything I'd ever experienced. The future we had imagined together disappeared in an instant, and I remember wondering how anyone rebuilt a life after losing the person they thought they'd grow old beside. I wasn't thinking about next year or even next month. Most days, I wasn't thinking past the next hour. I simply focused on breathing, getting out of bed, making it through the day, and hoping tomorrow might feel just a little lighter than today.
Looking back now, I realize something I couldn't see while I was living it. I carried myself through. Yes, I was surrounded by love. Friends checked in. Family reached out. Kind words arrived exactly when I needed them most, and I will always be grateful for every person who stood beside me. But there were countless moments when no one else could make the next decision for me. No one else could take the next breath, choose hope, or decide that I would keep going. Those were quiet choices that happened behind closed doors, one ordinary moment at a time.
That's the thing about resilience. It rarely announces itself. It doesn't always look brave while you're living it. Sometimes resilience looks like taking a shower when you don't want to get out of bed. It looks like walking the dog because someone still needs you. It looks like making dinner, answering one email, going to work, crying in the car, and then walking into the grocery store anyway. None of those moments feel extraordinary on their own, but when you string them together over weeks, months, and years, they become the story of someone who refused to give up.
When I look at my life today, I don't just see the woman who experienced profound loss. I see the woman who kept choosing life. I see someone who eventually found the courage to travel again, to laugh again, to create Sacred After, to dream about the future, and to believe there was still beauty waiting for her. None of that happened because healing arrived all at once. It happened because I kept taking one small step after another, even on the days I couldn't see where those steps were leading.
Maybe you've forgotten how much you've already survived. Maybe you're so focused on the challenges still in front of you that you've overlooked the incredible distance you've already traveled. I hope you'll pause today and look back with kinder eyes. Remember the version of yourself who wondered if they would ever smile again. Remember the person who thought they might never feel hopeful again. Then look at where you are now. You're still here. You're still growing. You're still reaching for something beautiful. That didn't happen by accident.
You carried yourself here.
And if you've already carried yourself through your hardest days, imagine what becomes possible from here. Trust the strength you've earned. Honor the resilience that quietly showed up every single day, even when you couldn't see it. The proof has been with you all along.
