You Can Hold the Past Without Living There

For a long time, I believed moving forward meant leaving the past behind. And if I'm honest, that thought terrified me. I didn't want to forget the man I loved. I didn't want to forget the life we built together or the dreams we once shared. Somewhere deep inside me, I had convinced myself that if I smiled too much, dreamed too boldly, or built a beautiful life again, I might somehow be leaving him behind.

But healing has a beautiful way of teaching us what fear never could. I've learned that I don't have to choose between honoring my past and embracing my future.

I can do both.

The memories are still mine. The love is still mine. The lessons, the laughter, the heartbreak, and even the grief all remain part of my story. They shaped me, strengthened me, and helped me become the woman I am today. But they no longer have to determine where I'm going.

There is a difference between carrying your past and living in it. Carrying it means you remember with love. You honor what mattered. You allow those experiences to become part of your foundation. Living there means replaying the same story until it becomes the only one you're willing to tell.

For years, I visited my past so often that I forgot to notice the life that was patiently waiting for me in the present. It wasn't until I gave myself permission to step forward that I realized something profound: my past wasn't asking me to stay. It had already given me everything it came to teach me.

Today, I still carry Malcolm with me. I carry the love we shared, the lessons we learned together, and the gratitude for a chapter that forever changed my life. But I also carry new dreams. New adventures. New friendships. New possibilities. None of those things diminish what came before. They honor it by proving that love has the power to expand us rather than imprison us.

Maybe that's where you are today. Holding a beautiful past while wondering if you're allowed to build a beautiful future.

You are. You don't have to erase your story to write a new chapter. You can carry your past with reverence without asking it to hold your future hostage.

Both can exist. And when they do, you'll discover that healing was never about leaving your past behind. It was about learning to walk forward with it beside you rather than in front of you.
